"Prof. L. P. Levine" writes: The recent Internet posting launching a fund raising drive in order to help Brock Meeks defray the legal expenses of a lawsuit brought against his news wire, CyberWire Dispatch, has drawn several inquiries for a summary of the issues involved in this case. Like many people who have read about the Meeks case, I'm curious to know the underlying facts. If Meeks is being sued in response to his use of constitutionally protected speech, then of course I'm on his side. But I can't form an opinion on that until (as a minimum) I know what he said. EFF sent a long message to its members about the case, but neglected to include any of its underlying facts. This posting addresses the natural request for more information, but (despite its length) only includes one line about what Meeks actually did: In his article, Brock expressed his personal disapproval of the SCI business activities. This is not enough for me to make any kind of informed decision about whom to support. In fact, all this coyness about what Meeks wrote might become the stuff of cover-up speculations, in those circles where such things are popular. Please just tell us: what did Meeks say? --- Stevens R. Miller |"I think that, as a litigant, I should (212) 227-1594 | dread the prospect of a lawsuit worse sharp@echonyc.com | than any other." As you may know similar libel action has occurred in the UK where there is a process whereby a defendant automatically gets costs if he wins so the prospects of being out of pocket are much lower than in the Meeks case. ------------------------------ From: swarnerr@mexico.bettis.gov (Bob Swarner) Date: 23 May 1994 18:19:21 GMT Subject: Employee looking up your license plate number Organization: Westinghouse Bettis Laboratory I recently got a parking "violation" from by employer for not parking exactly where they wanted me to. They put a slip on the windshield, which I figured they kept a record of to look for repeat offenders. Well, it turns out they also, via my license plate number, got my name and sent a copy to my supervisor. While this is not a big deal (my bosses comment was "Who cares?"), was this a proper use of the license plate? ------------------------------ From: Rick Lawless Date: 24 May 1994 15:09:04 +0100 Subject: Info On Clipper Chip Needed Urgently .. The interesting this is the both driving without the license in your possession and making a copy of your license, are both against the law! When I bought my car last year, I walked onto the lot, was singled out and descended upon by a vulture, er, salesman, told him about what I had to spend. He showed me a car - I liked it, so he got the keys and we went for a drive. I guess people are a little more laid back in Georgia...or desperate to make a sale :) -- Dan Newcombe newcombe@aa.csc.peachnet.edu Clayton State College Morrow, Georgia -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "And the man in the mirror has sad eyes." -Marillion ------------------------------ End of Computer Privacy Digest V4 #070 ****************************** .
